There has been a recent revival of interest in the doctrine of divine simplicity in systematic and philosophical theology, following decades of intense reflection on the tri-personhood of the Christian God. While recent studies have produced a greater appreciation of patristic and scholastic theologies, they have not yet engaged in dialogue with proponents of the trinitarian revival that emerged in the latter half of the twentieth century in anything other than polemical terms. This book offers a theological defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity through careful reading of both exemplary historical theologians and Robert W. Jenson, an important American contributor to the trinitarian revival. After tracing continuities and discontinuities amongst select historical theologians, the book approaches Jenson with a multivalent account of divine simplicity. The result is a more nuanced interpretation of Jenson’s theology, an account of divine simplicity that responds to perceived problems, and new constructive proposals for divine simplicity in trinitarian theology.

The most original and innovative Byzantine text on the Filioque discussion. The 'Dialogi sex de processione Spiritus Sancti' by Niketas, metropolitan of Thessaloniki, once known unproperly as "of Maroneia", is one of the most outstanding polemical works against the Latins, written in form of a dialogue, of the Comnenian era. Niketas (first half of the 12th c.) is commonly considered a "latinophrone" theologian, since he was "prepared to accept the Latin wording" (A. Kazhdan, 'Change in Byzantine Culture in the Eleventh and Twelfth Centuries', Berkeley 1985, p. 189), and his 'Dialogi' are the only Byzantine twelfth-century writings on the discussions with the Latin Church where Greek and Latin speakers reach an agreement on the procession of the Holy Spirit "through the Son", and where the Latin's arguments turn out to be ultimately longer and more persuasive than the Greek's mostly brief and provocative replies. The critical edition of these influential six dialogues, edited for the first time in their complete form, offer one of the most original and innovative text on the Filioque discussion and witness to the existence in the twelfth century of an uncommon way of interpreting the inter-Trinitarian relationship and to the usage of Aristotelic philosophy for interpreting the procession of the Holy Spirit.

This book arises out of contemporary questions regarding the nature and formation of the church amidst an economically divided society. Looking to Augustine of Hippo for guidance, Jonathan D. Ryan argues that the movement from private self-interest toward common love of God and neighbor is fundamental to the church's formation and identity amidst contemporary contexts of economic inequality. Ryan demonstrates the centrality of this theme in Augustine's Sermons and his monastic instruction (principally the Rule), illustrating how it shapes his pastoral guidance on matters pertinent to economic division, including use of material resources, and attitudes toward rich and poor. By reading Augustine's Sermons alongside his monastic instruction, this volume allows for a closer understanding of how Augustine's vision of a common life is reflected in his pastoral guidance to the wider congregation. The book's concluding reflections consider what the church in our time might learn from these aspects of Augustine's teaching regarding the formation of a common life, as members are drawn together in love of God and neighbour.

Recognizing the absence of a God named Yahweh outside of ancient Israel, this study addresses the related questions of Yahweh's origins and the biblical claim that there were Yahweh-worshipers other than the Israelite people. Beginning with the Hebrew Bible, with an exhaustive survey of ancient Near Eastern literature and inscriptions discovered by archaeology, and using anthropology to reconstruct religious practices and beliefs of ancient Edom and Midian, this study proposes an answer. Yahweh-worshiping Midianites of the Early Iron Age brought their deity along with metallurgy into ancient Palestine and the Israelite people.

"Karl Barth gilt als der „Kirchenvater des 20. Jahrhunderts".

Testimonials to Experience of the Trinity is a study in spirituality of the Trinity. ‘Testimonial’ refers to an affirming witness to experience of the Trinity offered with the intention of encouraging such experience or openness to it. This approach through testimonials provides access to experiences of the Trinity and the varying forms they take. After an initial chapter on Jesus as Spirit-empowered son of Abba, the study presents 15 testimonials to experience of the Trinity. They represent four periods in the history of Christianity in its worldwide expansion and exemplify literary and artistic mediums through which testimonials have been offered. The study suggests that each testimonial and the experience it relates forms a trinitarian spirituality, indeed a discipleship spirituality, rooted in Jesus’ experience of God. The study will be of personal interest while contributing to research in areas such as spirituality, theology, religious studies, philosophical theology, and philosophy of religion.

"This study examines the place of violence in Jesus's ministry in the context of eschatological expectations in Second Temple Judaism. By understanding Jesus's nonviolent words and deeds within this framework, it is argued that the Synoptic evangelists portray Jesus as consistently concerned to teach and embody a radical alternative to the idea that the kingdom of God would be inaugerated by the righteous violence of God's faithful people." --
